Edward Snowden : » Surveillance has just been legitimized. »

FRANCE 24’s exclusive interview with Edward Snowden, who became one of the world’s most wanted men after leaking confidential documents on US mass surveillance back in 2013.

According to Mr Snowden, no meaningful reforms have been done, however a few  changes in the law in the US to legitimize the surveillance by putting in on a sounder legal footing. Example the government had phone record and was storing it but now the USA Freedom Act it made it explicitly unlawful. However, the government asks the telecommunication companies  to keep records of all the customers in case it  needs it. Another difference is the little involvement of judges now.

Are there any changes regarding the issue ?

E.D responds that thanks to  further reporting and interest on the topic after his revelations,  everybody is now aware and understand what is going on. It is still not enough to protect ourselves but is better than ignorance. He goes on to accuse technology of enabling companies like Google and Facebook to influence and change our buying habits.

When asked if out of the 1.7 millions classified files he allegedly stole from the NSA there were some that he still had in his possession he answeres that we shouldnt be expecting any more new bombshell from him. He said that he destroyed everything he had as it is his way to protect the information.

Democracies threatens by new laws that affect our fundamental freedoms, example Yarovaya  Law (Big Brother Law) the anti-terror legislation in Russia?

For Snowden, it is disappointing that this kind of practice affects the West, citing the example of Canada, Australia , US with the Patriotic Act. According to him, this law move the boundaries of our freedoms and make us question what are our government doing in our name internationally?

When asked about the efficiency of encrypted message by the journalist, the Whistleblower confirms that strong encryption works. He adds that without it he could not have communicated with journalist and get away with it. However,  he denounces whatsapp agressive opposition to its customer privacy. He says that the content of the messages cant be read directly but what is visible is everyone you are talking to and how often. This should not be legal

How would you describe yourself hero or vilain?

People always want to put me in a box, there is no goods and bads , you shoudnt distance yourself from these classes. The difference is the decision you make. You are one decision to changing the world.

Edward Snowden shares that he misses the most his family, but that he sleeps in moscow but technology let him live anywhere in the world. This limit the power of exil as a tool of government in order to silence him. He is professionally a speaker for conferences, universities and corporations, he has been elected President of the board of the Freedom of the Press Foundation in the United States.

He never uses credit card,  ride the metro, go to the restaurant without fear but prudence. Are we going to permit our institutions to bully out of the way we believe is right? He asks.  He did something he believes in and is in peace with himself.

If brought back to the United States do you believe you will have a fair trial?

It is about what the law permits, he has been charge with the Espionnage Act of 1918. This law, he points out, that doesnot allow the people accused to make a defense to the jury and explain why they did what they are accused of. He qualifies other practices and measures allowed by this Act of shady and not very fair.  If the trial is one where the jury is not told why the accused did what he did, is it fair?

PERMANENT RECORDS

On the daily show, Trevor Noah interviewed Edward Snowden about his new book. It appeared that the government efforts to discourage people from reading it and try to ban it, did nothing but increase the public attention to the book.
